Naqi Ahsan for Councillor – Ward 1
Hello Neighbours, my name is Naqi Ahsan and I am a candidate for Ward 1 Councillor in this fall’s election.
I have the education, experience and proven track record of community service. After volunteering for many years, I want to take helping my community to the next level.
By being part of Council, I can make an impact on a larger scale. I have developed strong relationships within the community, business and political circles that I can draw upon to really help residents of Ward 1.
Community Roots & Service
I have lived in Newmarket with my wife MaryLou and children Nisa and Amir since 2002 and within Ward 1 for almost 20 years. I am a local business owner; hold degrees in mathematics (Waterloo) and business (York); enjoy contributing positively to our wonderful community and have volunteered at both Inn From The Cold and Southlake Hospital for many years. Additionally, I am also an active member and Former Chair of the Southlake Corporate Patient and Family Advisory Council.
As a testament to my long-term commitment to community service, I was honoured to receive Canada’s 150th Anniversary Medal for Volunteer Service in 2017, Ontario’s Volunteer Service Award in 2020 and Ontario Tennis Association’s Volunteer Award in 2024.
Leadership & Community Involvement
As an experienced project manager, I bring valuable business insight from working directly with both private and public sector clients including Royal Bank, Honda, WSIB, Bell, OLG and Magna where I managed and successfully implemented multimillion-dollar projects on time and within budget. Currently as an active Central York Chamber of Commerce member, I am in regular contact with our business community who drive Newmarket's job market and local growth. Listening and learning from them first-hand allows me to bring practical, immediate economic solutions to the table.
My board experience includes Newmarket Pickleball Club, Newmarket Men’s Probus Club, German Mills Tennis Club and a residential Condo Corporation. This diverse board leadership has deepened my understanding about fiduciary duty, property management, complex budgets, and bylaws. I believe this demonstrates that I am deeply invested in community sports, connected with local retirees, executives, professionals and understand the needs of aging demographics. These roles have proven my ability to listen to differing viewpoints and build consensus. I have the practical governance experience and collaborative spirit needed to deliver results for Newmarket.
Personal Connection to Newmarket
Outside of my professional and volunteer work, I cherish traveling and making memories with my family. I also love playing pickleball and have spent over 50 years captaining a local club tennis team.

As your Ward 1 Councillor I will be dedicated to enhancing our parks, trails and recreational spaces to build a healthier and more connected community. During the campaign, I look forward to meeting you to earn your trust, support, and vote, so that I can continue serving our community proudly.
